Step By Step Restoration-1965 Fender Mustang P2
Mustang Decal Application

This decal is a post-1966 design...it is about 40 years
old! Antique decals are very stubborn to release and
stick to the headstock. They are also extremely brittle
and will flake away without provocation!
First spray the
neck with sealer and at least one layer of clear laquer.
Let the laquer dry before applying the decal.
Finding an original
Mustang logo decal is
extremely difficult. So
what are the chances
of finding a 40-year-old
decal already in the
case after purchasing
this guitar at a pawn
shop? Life is good!
Notice that the release paper has the headstock profile
printed to assist in positioning.
After wetting the headstock surface and soaking the
decal in water for five minutes, the decal is positioned
and the release paper gently pulled away. Although this
image makes the process look easy, with an ancient
decal it was not! A #11 X-Acto blade was used to
persuade the decal to release while pulling on the
paper.
