Step By Step Restoration-1965 Fender Mustang P6
Reassembly

Wet sanding the headstock is tricky; use a
sanding block a very little water. Don't let water
run into the tuner holes while you are sanding! The
water soaks into the wood, the holes swell, and
you will sand through the finish. If your wet
sanding creates a "paste" on the surface, then you
are doing it right.
Document the neck date
on a vintage Fender.
Check that the other
dated parts are from the
same era.
Be careful when hammering in tuner ferrules! It is
best to shield the work with a thin scrap of wood
while tapping.

Fender sawed sections of the Kluson tuners to
make them fit correctly...only the top and bottom
tuners have a complete flange.
The body is carefully reassembled. Take great
care in making sure that your workspace is totally
clear of screws, parts, and tools. If you
absent-mindedly lay the body onto any of these...it
leaves a mark! A clean work area will save you
tears later!
When re-assembling the
guitar, be sure to have a
clean workspace devoid of
tools and parts. These
objects can ruin your new
finish...and your whole day!
The work on this vintage beauty is almost complete.
The value of this guitar is now substantially
improved. I feel as though I have preserved a bit of
music history whenever I return a classic guitar to
it's original condition. Turn to the next page to see
