Step By Step Restoration-1965 Fender Mustang/ Daphne Blue
I just love these Fender Mustangs! The short scale allows the
strings to come to pitch at a lower tension, so the chords ring
beautifully. This guitar was parted out by a vintage dealer on
ebay. I bid as each part was auctioned...within a few days, I had
won all the original parts and was ready to put this beauty back
together.
This Pre-CBS Fender Mustang
was saved from being
dissected. Each part was
purchased from the same
source on ebay- even the
original battered case...
The neck date shows the date of manufacture to be the 6th of
June, 1965; this guitar was built only two days before the red
Mustang which is restored in story 1a! This is another
cherished pre-CBS Mustang.
Although this guitar was stripped of its original finish, notice
that bits of the original Daphne Blue finish still cling to the
inside of the neck. Two types of fingerboards were used on
early Fender Mustangs: a slab fingerboard, which had a thicker
cross-section, and the more common thinner laminated
fingerboard which is shown on this example.
When finding vintage parts for an instrument, make sure that
you choose the correct ones. Fender Mustangs used Kluson
Deluxe tuners with oval buttons from 1964 to mid 1965. Fender
began to source "F" tuners mid-1965; these parts had
parallelogram tuner bodies with octagonal buttons. "F" tuners
were used for all later Mustangs and even the reissues.

Mustang tremolo plates have differences too, depending on the
year. The plate from 1964-1965 has "PAT PEND." below the Fender
logo. In 1966, this was removed.
Beware of reissue or third-party Mustang parts. Some of the new
parts do not fit vintage guitars. Tremolo arms and pick guards are
notorious for not fitting correctly.
This restoration was very similar to the red Mustang which was
completed previously. For this restoration, the color was much
more accurate. Guitar ReRanch, a web-based company, produces a
terrific range of original Fender colors in nitrocellulose lacquer.
The finishes are available in spray cans which are excellent for
those without professional spray equipment.
